Why the morning is better than its reputation
The morning safari is underbooked because the evening one is marketed harder, not because it is worse. What you get at 6 a.m. is a dune belt with nothing on it. No convoys, no tracks in the sand, and light coming in at an angle that makes the dunes look the way they look in photographs.
The cost is a genuinely early alarm and no dinner.
Why the evening is still the default
Because the programme is good and because sunset is the single best twenty minutes. You get the dune drive, the light, a meal, and an evening that feels like an occasion rather than an activity. For a visitor doing one safari on a one-week trip in February, that is the right choice.
By season
- November to March. Either works. Evening for the programme.
- April, May, October. Evening is warm but fine once the sun drops. Morning is very comfortable.
- June to August. Morning. The evening version stays hot well past sunset, the camp time is shortened, and the experience is noticeably worse.
By who is travelling
- Children under six. Morning.
- Children six and up. Evening — the fire and the henna are the memory.
- Photographers. Morning, or better, a dedicated sunrise safari.
- Couples marking something. Evening, or the overnight if you have the night free.
- A short trip with a packed itinerary. Morning. It does not cost you a day.
If you are doing two
Do one of each rather than two of the same. A morning drive and a separate evening at camp are two different experiences; two evening safaris are one experience twice.

Which has better dune driving?
The morning, marginally. Cool sand is firmer and most drivers prefer it. The difference is real but small, and the route is the same.
Which is better for photography?
The morning, clearly. You get the blue hour and then an hour of long shadows with no vehicle tracks in the sand yet. The evening light is just as good but the dunes are already driven over and other operators are on the same ridges.
Is there a camp dinner in the morning?
No. The morning safari is the drive, the dunes and a light breakfast. The camp programme — dinner, fire, henna, show — is an evening product.
Which is cheaper?
The morning, because it is shorter and has no catering or camp programme.
Which is better in summer?
The morning, without much argument. From June to August the evening stays hot well past sunset and the camp time is cut short.
Which is better with small children?
The morning, up to about six years old. An early start is easier than a 10pm drive home, and the heat is the real enemy.
Can we do both?
Yes, and on a longer trip it is a good combination — a morning drive early in the week and the evening programme later, rather than two of the same thing.
