Answer first: taller, redder, further

Lahbab is the red dune belt out on the Dubai–Hatta road. The sand is iron-rich, so it reads deep orange-red in low light rather than pale gold, and the dunes are tall enough that the driving genuinely feels different.

The cost is time. It is about forty minutes further each way than the closer dune areas, which is why the pickup is earlier and the day is longer.

Who it suits

Anyone who has already done a standard safari and wants the driving to be the point. Photographers after the colour. Groups who do not mind a longer drive for a better dune belt.

Who it does not suit

Nervous passengers, anyone prone to motion sickness, and families whose youngest member will not enjoy an extra ninety minutes in a car. The standard private evening safari is closer, shorter and gentler on the same evening programme.

Questions we get asked

Why are these dunes red?

Iron oxide in the sand. The colour is real and it is strongest in the hour before sunset, which is why the trip is timed around it.

Is the dune driving harder than the standard safari?

Yes, noticeably. The dunes at Lahbab are taller and steeper. If anyone in your group is nervous or prone to motion sickness, the standard private evening safari is the better choice.

Why is the day longer?

Lahbab sits out on the Hatta road, so it is roughly an extra 40 minutes each way. That is the trade for the taller sand.

Can we still ask for a gentle drive?

Yes. It is your vehicle, so the intensity is set by your group. Say so at the safety brief.
